About the role
Mining stops when the fleet stops. Excavators, dumpers, dozers, graders and drills are the most expensive assets on the lease and the ones whose availability decides whether the month's plan is met.
This role leads the HEMM department: maintenance strategy and execution, the workshops, condition monitoring, and the hard commercial side — spares, tyres, fuel, rebuild-or-replace decisions and hired equipment contracts. You will be judged on availability and on cost per operating hour, together.
Key responsibilities
- Own availability, reliability and utilisation of the HEMM fleet — excavators, dumpers, dozers, graders, drills and support equipment
- Set the maintenance strategy: preventive schedules to OEM norms, condition monitoring, oil analysis and component life management
- Lead the workshops and field maintenance crews across shifts, including manpower planning and skill development
- Manage major component rebuild programmes and make evidence-based repair, rebuild or replace recommendations
- Control the department budget — spares, tyres, lubricants, contracts and hired equipment — and report cost per operating hour
- Negotiate and administer maintenance contracts, annual rate contracts and OEM support agreements
- Analyse breakdown and failure data and drive engineering and operating changes that remove repeat causes
- Track and improve MTBF, MTTR and mechanical availability across equipment classes
- Enforce workshop and field maintenance safety — work at height, lifting, hydraulic energy isolation, LOTO and hot work
- Ensure DGMS and mine safety requirements are met in equipment operation and maintenance practice
Qualifications and experience
- B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical or Automobile Engineering
- Heavy earth moving machinery maintenance, with departmental responsibility at an operating mine
- Deep working knowledge of mobile hydraulics, diesel engines, powertrains and undercarriage systems
- Demonstrated control of a maintenance budget and of contractor and vendor relationships
- Experience of condition monitoring and component life management on a mining fleet
Preferred, not essential
- Caterpillar, Komatsu, BEML, Volvo or Hitachi mining equipment experience
- Fleet management and telematics system exposure
- Tyre management programme experience
- Familiarity with SAP PM or a comparable CMMS
