Balasore Alloys, formerly Ispat Alloys Limited, is part of the renowned Ispat group of Companies, a major business house in the country, promoted by the Mittals. The group's companies are spread across several countries besides India.

Balasore Alloys was incorporated in the year 1984 at Balasore, Odisha and at present it has two plants with total capacity of 160,000 MTPA. With multiple furnaces of different capacities, the company has the flexibility to produce different grades of Ferro Chrome as per market dynamics.

The company has captive mines in different locations in Sukinda Valley at Jajpur Road (Odisha). The mines take care of the Chrome ore requirement of the company.

What makes us different

We mine our own chrome ore in the Sukinda Valley and smelt it into ferro chrome a few hours from where it leaves the ground. Very few producers in India own that whole chain, and it changes the work more than anything else on this page: the people on the mine benches, in the beneficiation plant and at the furnaces are colleagues working on one problem, not separate companies trading across a contract.

Two plants, 160,000 MTPA of capacity and furnaces of several sizes mean we change grade as the market moves rather than making one product and hoping. It is a specialised business — submerged arc furnace practice, chromite beneficiation, high-tension power — and the sites run lean, so engineers here take charge of a section, a schedule and a team early instead of waiting a decade for it.

Our purpose is plain: turn Odisha’s chrome into ferro chrome the world’s stainless steel depends on, and send everybody who does it home unhurt.

What we offer

Our impact

Ferro chrome is what makes stainless steel stainless, and ours starts as ore from our own mines in the Sukinda Valley. It leaves here for steelmakers in India and abroad, ending up in kitchens, hospitals, chemical plants and construction that will outlast all of us. Closer to home, the plants and mines are a large part of what Balasore and Jajpur districts do for a living — direct employment, contractors, transport and the businesses that grow around a working site.

Our culture

Safety, discipline and ownership are what we ask of everyone, and the first is not negotiable. Permit discipline, contractor safety and learning from incidents belong to the production and maintenance leaders on shift, not to a department that visits once a month. Because the sites run lean, people are trusted early and expected to decide rather than pass it upward — which is demanding, and is the honest reason some people thrive here and some do not.

Career development

Submerged arc furnace metallurgy, chromite beneficiation and high-tension power systems are specialised fields with few employers in India, so what you learn here is scarce and it travels with you. Grades and their experience bands are defined company-wide, so what a role expects of you — and where it sits against the rest — reads the same at every location. Movement between the plants, the mines and the corporate offices is ordinary rather than exceptional, and a large share of our supervisory cadre has been with the company for more than a decade.

Rewards and benefits

Terms are set by grade and by location, and the requisition itself carries anything specific to the role. At the plant and mine sites this typically includes company accommodation, schooling support for children, medical facilities and transport, with benefits linked to grade. We would rather set out plainly what exists and discuss what it is worth for a particular post at offer stage than publish a figure that changes.
